The pretzel is a little known symbol of Lent. Pretzels originated at a Lenten fare made of flour, salt and water. They were first made by monks who twisted long, thin strips of dough into a shape that looked like praying arms. These were then distributed to the poor as food and as a reminder to pray.
Through a dramatic adaptation of Eric Carle’s book, Walter the Baker, of how pretzels originated, students teach others about the symbolism of pretzels and the importance of prayer, fasting and almsgiving as a Lenten preparation for the resurrection of Jesus.
