Despite the performing aspect of the art curriculum at Georges Vanier,
it is not a 'performing arts' school. The school does put on several
different plays a year, as well as demonstrating their musical, dramatic,
and rhythmic talents in front of the school. For the last few years,
Mrs. Brenda Forrest has been responsible for the school musicals.
Mrs. Bischoff lets the students demonstrate the talents learned in
Orff in front of the student body as well.
Each of the fine arts at Georges Vanier is equally weighted, but there is a special
emphasis on the visual arts and music, because the staff, as compared to an external
instructor, teaches them.
Georges Vanier School
places an emphasis on the "whole child"--advocating
development in academics, spirituality, physical fitness, and art.
Currently, there is no lack of development in the academic and spirituality
section, because that is the goal of a catholic school. Because of
the emphasis placed on the artistic nature, the students develop
extensively in that nature. An area that currently lacks emphasis
is the physical education sector. The students have gym class, and
there are several sports teams, but there is a definite need for
physical fitness. The gym is very old and very small, and could use
some repairs and expansion.
Mr. Remizowski is the current principal at Georges Vanier School; this is his
first year in this position. He has some plans for the future, like his hopes
for increased physical education. As well, some possible improvements for the
school Mr. Remizowski would like to instigate are in the works. As aforementioned,
a possible improvement on the gym facilities would be nice, but very costly.
As well, the school does not have a stage for its drama facilities and productions.
The artistic nature of the school is emphasised in the fine arts curriculum,
but a possible expansion, according to Mr. Remizowski, would be a development
studio. This would be an expensive project, and would emphasise some of the
graphic arts, like photo development, video authoring, and multimedia development.
Within the last few years, Georges Vanier School has installed a whole new
computer lab. However, the students' computer class is not taught by a specialist,
like the art classes. The students are taught to use the computers, but they
are not taught in a specific manner--rather, their respective teachers teach
them computers in a broad and general manner.
Georges Vanier School has a long-standing history of providing
a quality catholic education, and its students are well prepared
for high school when they leave. The arts program enriches and equips
the students for high school. The students are more proficient public
speakers and good at expressing feelings and thoughts in many mediums.
If students take the fine arts program at Georges Vanier School,
they are allowed to take the grade 10 arts program in their grade
9 year. Students are academically prepared for high school, but it
is hard to measure the success of an educational system without measuring
the maturity level of the individual students.
In Georges Vanier School, the emphasis placed on the fine arts
dovetails nicely with the religious and educational mandates of
the Catholic School system.
Mr. Remizowski says that Georges Vanier School focuses on the "whole child." Emphasising
the artistic nature of the child is what Georges Vanier School does uniquely
from all other elementary schools in Western Canada. Perhaps the artistic nature
is emphasised too much, while the physical education sector is downplayed--but
there is always room for improvement. A myriad of skilled staff is ready and
able to teach children, and are handpicked for their ability to integrate the
fine arts into the curriculum.
