Farming:
How the agriculture industry
helps Weyburn
Researched by the students
of Grade 3 Room 5.
- INTERVIEW WITH A LOCAL FARMER
-
The average farmer around Weyburn
farms approximately 1600 acres of land. The crops they grow vary : wheat,
flax, mustard, canola, oats, and barely. On average, they work with and
- harvest between 40,000 - 60,000 bushels
a year.
-
- The machinery they use are: tractors, air drill,
cultivators, sprayers, grain truck, swathers, combines and straight header,
auger and rock picker.
-
- They buy and get their machinery serviced
from the different implement dealers in Weyburn. These businesses especially
help the individual farmer stay in business by stocking parts
- needed and making themselves available
during peak seasons.
-
- Farmers benefit the people of Weyburn
by selling their grain locally, and in turn providing
- jobs for Weyburn people.
-
- The farming business involves many
other businesses in Weyburn because of their demand for
- products and services, and the need
for insurance and banking.

INTERVIEW FROM WATSON'S
DISTRIBUTORS
- As a main implement business in Weyburn,
Watson's Distributors actively canvas an area that is approximately a 40
mile radius of Weyburn. In all they have about 1800 farm accounts and 1000
business accounts. Much of their business comes from even a larger area
for their services. Their used equipment has gone from as far west as interior
B. C., and as far east as Quebes.
-
- As a major business in the city of
Weyburn, John Deere's current tractor line includes approx. 45 different
models. They range from 13 h.p. lawn and garden tractors to 400+ h.p. four
wheel drives. They also sell combines, swathers, airseeders, cultivators,
loaders, manure spreaders, hay balers, and sprayers.
- Watson's Distributor's dealership
serves the farmers of the area in helping them meet their needs for parts
and specialized service they need to be sure their equipment stays in top
functioning condition, as well as selling them the stuff!
- The goal in doing this is to help
the farmers be as productive as they can, and get their crops or cattle
into the best shape possible so they can make a living for themselves.
-
- On a little bigger scale, we provide
many people with an opportunity to learn new things and make a living for
themselves as well by working at our dealership.
-
- We also like to give something back
to the community by doing various sponsorships of many things such as 4-H,
Red Wing Hockey, Beavers Baseball, and donations to the groups that help
do everything from trying to find cures for different diseases to local
service clubs that maintain playgrounds around the city.
-
- On a little higher level again, Watson's
Distributors take pride in the fact that we are helping people "feed
the world", as that is what happens to various commodities that their
customers grow!
