History:
The
Nakoda originated from the Dakota First Nation. While
the traditional range of the Nakoda included much of west-central
North America, our
community emigrated from Montana.
In the past century our people have dispersed into the provinces
of Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba .
The
traditional gathering place of the Nakoda people was
the Cypress
Hills. In 1873 a group of American wolfers (men
who used poisoned carcasses as bait to kill wolves)
murdered
dozens of our people in what is known as the Cypress
Hills Massacre. Cypress Hills has since become
an Inter-provincial
Park. The
descendants of Man Who Took The Coat and his band have
resided at Carry The Kettle since 1891, after
signing Treaty #4 on September
25, 1877. The Treaty
Land Entitlement process has been ongoing. |
