Soil

What is soil used for and what soil is it?
The type of soil found in southern Saskatchewan is chernozemic.
This soil is usually black or brown, and is used for agriculture.
What is soil made of?
Soil is a renewable resource because very slowly soil renews
itself. Soil is a collection of natural material. Soil is made of
many different things. Soil is made up of sand, silt, clay, dead
or decaying plants and animals, living organisms, and the
products of living animals.
What are the different layers?
There are three layers of soil called horizons. The horizons are
topsoil, subsoil, and parent material. There is an organic
surface layer on top and on the bottom theres bedrock. The
surface layer is composed of decaying, organic material that has
fallen recently. Topsoil is black and has roots of plants and
trees, and there are many micro-organisms. Animals that burrow,
burrow in topsoil. Subsoil has pieces of rock in it and is a
yellowish brown colour. The parent material is a light colour,
and contains bedrock and/or glacial drift. Bedrock is shale and
sandstone, and is an underlying solid rock.
