To start this assignment, you need to download the Representation
chart Word file and save it on your computer or network. There are
two charts in this document, one titled Representation and the
other Racial Representation. The data for both should be collected
at the same time over a period of a few days as you watch or scan television.
You will need this data for later assignments in this module. However,
you should still move ahead with the next lessons as you are collecting
this data.
For the Representation chart, collect information on representation
of different sexes, races, and ages by examining these representations
in television shows and movies. View an example of each of the five
genres indicated on the chart, then choose any other five of your own.
For each, identify the character’s name or role name and gender, then
his or her:
- race/culture (e.g., black, white, native)
- job (e.g., lawyer, doctor, writer, dancer)
- age (e.g., child, teen, adult, senior)
- role (e.g., hero, villain, comic relief)
- positive representation/negative representation (identify what is
negative or positive in the representation)
Record your findings by typing it into the Word chart. If you wish,
you may complete it on scrap paper at home, then enter the information
into Word later. Use this chart for the analysis in Part B and for
later lessons.
For the Racial Representation chart:
- count the number of times you see each of the different races identified
on the chart by recording a tick in the first column of the chart.
- jot down your major observations of the kinds of negative or positive
representation in the next two columns, ie. drug addict or doctor.
Retain this chart for a later lesson on Representation of Race.
