PERENNIALS

Perennials are plants that do survive the winter.

Usually the plant part that grows above the ground dies , but the roots are protected by layers of snow.

Then in the spring, the plants will start to grow again.

TREES

All trees must find ways to survive the winter.

tree

Many trees lose their leaves each fall . They are called deciduous trees .

  • In the fall, heat, light, water and minerals become less available.
  • The trees get rid of the leaves by stopping the flow of food to the leaves.
  • Once the food supply is shut off, the leaves change color and then fall off.

Some trees remain green all winter.

fir

Trees that have needle-like leaves and produce cones are called coniferous trees

  • These trees do not lose their needles in the fall.
  • The needles drop off a little at a time during the year, especially in late summer.
  • Although the trees remain green, they are not growing in the wintertime.
