ALBERTA

  • The name "Alberta" is in honour of the daughter of Queen Victoria.
  • Alberta became a province in 1905.

THE PROVINCIAL FLAG

  • The shield of the province is on a background of royal blue.
  • The blue background represents the prairie skies.
  • The Cross of St. George ( patron saint of England ) is at the top.
  • Below it are the Rockies, foothills, prairies and wheat fields.
  • All these represent the landscape of Alberta.
  • It became the official provincial flag in 1968.

THE COAT OF ARMS

  • A golden lion and a pronghorn are on either side of the shield.
  • Above is a crown on a beaver; the beaver is on a helmet.
  • Grass, wild roses and the motto are at the bottom.
  • The motto means "strong and free".

THE WILD ROSE

  • The floral emblem was chosen by Alberta school children.
  • It grows not only in Alberta, but in many parts of Canada.
  • The Wild Rose has a beautiful scent and is a pretty bright pink.
  • The red berries that it produces are food for birds in the winter.

  • mammal - Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep
  • bird - Great Horned Owl
  • fish - Bull Trout
