Habitat

A spotted salamanders habitat is:

Ø     Moist woodlands near swamps

Ø     Ponds

Ø     Creeks

Reproduction

Þ   The spotted salamander goes to ponds at night to breed.

Þ   The eggs are attached to an underwater stick or plant.

Þ   Spotted salamanders lay up to 200 eggs in 1 single mass in early spring.

Þ   Their larvae hatch in 1-2 they then turn to adults in about another 2-4 months.

 

Family

·        This type of salamander is part of the mole salamander family.

·        They are one of the larger members of the mole family.

·        They can reach to a length of 8 inches or more.

·        They spend most of their lives underground.

·        Surprisingly the spotted salamander has well developed lungs, unlike most salamanders.

Color of the Salamander

The salamander’s background color can be black, dark brown or dark gray.

The young salamander’s are normally have a black background. However, on all of these kinds of salamanders they have yellow spots, which is why they are called the spotted salamander. Duh!
