Content Guidelines

Saskatchewan Learning provides the opportunity for schools in Saskatchewan to develop and publish their school home pages on the Internet. This service is provided free of charge to enhance learning opportunities for students and is not intended to compete with other Internet providers. The following content guidelines have been developed to promote the free-flowing exchange of ideas and information and at the same time maintain standards consistent with the Internet and Learning communities.

Guest pages should be in good taste and reflect positively on the guest as a member of Saskatchewan's Learning community. The following is a non-exclusive list of content and activities that are not permitted on the Saskatchewan Learning web site:

  • Providing materials or access to materials that are grossly offensive, including expressions of bigotry, prejudice, pornography, racism, hatred, profanity, defamation, abuse, or threats to any group or individual
  • Promoting or providing materials about illegal activities, or providing access to pirated software
  • Using the home pages for commercial purposes or personal gain
  • Using the home pages (or directory) as storage for remote loading of non-Learningal materials
  • Including internal or external links to Internet Relay Chat lines or Guest Books on the Internet
  • Developing restricted or password-only access pages, or hidden pages or images without school board approval
  • Infringing copyright, patent, trademark, or other intellectual property laws
  • Providing or promoting materials inconsistent with the goals of the Learning community and Saskatchewan Learning

Saskatchewan Learning is not responsible for the content of any school home page. The views expressed in the school home page area are the responsibility of the posting school and not Saskatchewan Learning. When developing and publishing school web pages, teachers should familiarize themselves with their school board's policies regarding publications. For example, many boards will require that students' guardians sign release forms before allowing students' photographs to be published in print and electronic documents.

Saskatchewan Learning actively monitors the content of school home pages and will investigate complaints of violation of these guidelines. Saskatchewan Learning reserves the right to remove any page from the site found to violate the above-mentioned content guidelines. Saskatchewan Learning is not responsible for any loss of data resulting from the deletion of school home pages, network, or system outages, files corruption, or any other reasons.

Technical Guidelines

  • Try not to create too many sub directories. This will make page development less confusing for beginners and easier for the site manager to handle.
  • All web documents must be used with the file extension "html" and not "htm".
  • All URL's with the exception of those going outside the Saskatchewan Learning web site, should be relative. Use a href="index.html" in the same directory.
  • All filenames anchored with *.html files and all html tags must be typed in lowercase letters. The Unix server upon which the files will be reside is case sensitive. A mixture of cases will result in the error message "The requested URL filename .html was not found on the server."
  • Graphic files are best saved in gif format and resolved to no more than 80 dpi. This will reduce load time and reserve memory allocation for more content. If your documents reference several graphics files, you may want to create a sub directory (e.g., "graphic") in which to store them, ensuring graphic directory is included in your anchor paths. E.G., use a IMG SRC="/graphics/image.gif".
  • School web page developers will send their files to the Saskatchewan Learning Server via File Transfer Protocol (FTP).
