9 - Chemical Reactions |
Objective
2
|
Describe
some chemical reactions. |
| Objective
2.1 |
Observe
and describe a variety of chemical reactions. |
| Objective
2.2 |
Recognize
that a chemical reaction involves reactants and products. |
| Objective
2.3 |
Recognize
those characteristics which indicate that a chemical reaction
has taken place. |

Break the students into groups of two and have them research one of
the following terms:
- Endothermic
Reactions
- Exothermic
Reactions
- Rates
of Chemical Reactions - Concentration
- Rates
of Chemical Reactions - Surface Area
- Rates
of Chemical Reactions - Temperature
- Rates
of Chemical Reactions - Catalysts
They need
to research and present the following information to the class:
- Definition
and explanation of the term
- Three
Real Life Examples (Know how it is used in real life, where it occurs
in real life and why they consider it to be an example of this reaction)
- Bring
an example or a picture of an example to use during their presentation.

Have students read through the notes on ENEGRY
IN CHEMICAL REACTIONS
and watch the videos on the student
page of Lesson 9.

Print
off the 8 station instructions. Place them around the room and collect
all of the materials required. Once the stations are set up, break your
students up into groups and hand out the
data collection sheet
provided. Explain to the students that you will give them approximately
three minutes per station. Let them know that you will turn the lights
on and off when they are supposed to move to the next station. THEY SHOULD
NOT MOVE BEFORE THIS TIME! The students will move around the stations
completing the chart as they go. They are to observe the chemical changes
and determine the reasons why a chemical change occurred. Once they have
completed all stations, they can return to their tables or desks and double
check their responses. It might be a good idea to have them recopy their
initial observations prior to submitting it for evaluation.
