Introduction In the pursuit of technology school divisions throughout North America are spending millions of dollars. Some common thoughts are; if we just had greater bandwidth, more connectivity, faster CPUs, flashier software, then our teachers would really be using computers effectively in their classrooms. It is important to realize, however, that simply acquiring new hardware and software will not ensure the integration of technology into the teaching and learning process. For integration to take place, staff development is essential. |

We must also understand that because technology alters the way teachers teach and students learn, a new vision is necessary. This new vision is composed of many elements, all of which comprise a technology plan. One of the key elements of a comprehensive educational technology plan is teacher training. Planning professional development in isolation of an inclusive technology plan will not provide the teachers with the necessary direction for the integration of technology into the classroom. A complete professional development plan can only be achieved through the development of a complete technology plan. If teachers do not see an overall direction for the implementation and integration of technology, how will the division every be able to determine, "Are we there yet?" |
