Truss Rafter Styles


 

This is a sample of different types of truss rafters. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Below are some points about each style.

 

king post truss
 
  • Simplest of all trusses.
  • Used mainly on smaller building, such as garages, where there is not a large span.
 

fink truss
 
  • Also known as the W truss.
  • One of the most common and widely used trusses.
  • Gives good support to the top and bottom chords.
 

howe truss
 
  • Used for larger spans where the bottom chord needs more support.
 

attic truss
 
  • The attic truss is used in places where you want storage in the attic space.
  • Note that there is still room for insulation outside of the storage space.
 

scissor truss
 
  • Used when you would like a vaulted, or open ceiling.
  • Can also be used in a garage, when you would like more headroom.
  • The bottom slope (inside the house) is half of the outer slope.
 

mono truss
 
  • Mostly used for single slope additions, such as a veranda, attached garage, or carport.
 


warren truss
 
  • This is often used for sloped ceilings or for flat roofs.
  • It can also be used for floor framing.
