Threaded Discussion

A threaded discussion (aka message board or forum) is essentially an electronic bulletin board on which messages are posted over a period of time. In a threaded discussion in a course, the initial post is usually made by the teacher, in the form of a question or statement. Further postings are comprised of responses to the initial post or to other postings in the discussion. The thread in a threaded discussion refers to the initial post plus all of the postings made to it.

A threaded discussion is useful in education because of its asynchronous nature. The period of time between postings made by students allows for all participants to reflect on the discussion topic and dig deeper into the topic with each successive posting.

An example of a threaded discussion about electronic whiteboards may be found at http://www.devicetop.com/site/forum/viewmsg/$context/forum/viewmsg/msg-7790.
