Advertising Savvy

A. Jingles and Slogans

How well do you know your advertising?  In an effort to make consumers remember particular brands, jingles and slogans are two common advertising techniques that have been used extensively.

JINGLES:  verse or song that repeats sounds or has a catchy rhythm

SLOGANS:  a word or phrase used to advertise; motto

Just for fun: Take the Ad Savvy Quiz in order to test your knowledge of jingles and slogans. This is for laughs, not for marks.

B. Songs

Entire musical scores have been written for advertising products.   Some of the songs have even made it to the charts.  One such example is Bill Backer and Billy Davis' "I'd Like to Buy the World a Coke" which became the famous pop song "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing".

Go to Hummingbird Production for further examples of musical arrangements.  Keep this site in mind for Unit 5 if you are interested in creating music and lyrics for advertising.

OPTIONAL:

Try to stump members of the class by providing your own list of jingles or slogans.
