Lesson Plan
|
|
1. Engaging (Table
Of Contents)
|
|
·
Invite students to the reading corner, where a display has been created
with each illustrator’s books and pictures.
·
In a class discussion, review any terms that were introduced from the
last lesson: author, illustrator, biography, collage,
detail.
·
The teacher will focus on Barbara Reid’s books. (The teacher will wear a headband to which
a clay flower has been attached.)
·
Show the students Barbara Reid’s book cover The Party and ask the students how the illustrator made her illustration,
or how the headband is made.
Read the back cover.
|
|
2. Exploring (Table
Of Contents)
|
·
Display other Barbara Reid book covers and discuss the illustrations. (Are the illustrations all made with clay?)
·
Start a KWL as a class.
·
At this point, you may want to visit Barbara Reid’s Website
or read her biography or view the video Meet
the Artist: Barbara
Reid.
·
The teacher can read the book The
Party to the students.
In a class discussion, have students share their
stories of going to a party.
|
|
|
·
Discuss how Barbara Reid uses clay artwork in her illustrations or read
the book Fun with
Modeling Clay which shows the steps an illustrator
uses to make clay illustrations (background first, using
layers, tools that would help her).
·
Students complete response journal and
will draw their favourite illustration of the story The Party.
·
When students have finished their response journals, they can look at
the reading corner to explore other books illustrated
by Barbara Reid.
·
As a class, add to KWL chart.
·
Identify “cl” sound (clay) and other words that have “l” blends.
|
|
4. Other Activities (Table
Of Contents)
|
|
·
Read The Party and use pie
plates and clay to make a clay illustration.
·
Read Gifts and focus on the
illustrations and on what tool the illustrator may have
used to get that effect.
Set up stations at which students can experiment
with using toothpicks, plastic knives, plastic forks,
plastic spoons, popsicle sticks and cookie cutters on
clay.
·
Read Gifts and do pattern
writing. My grandma
went to____________, My Grandma said, “What would you
have me bring?”
|
|
