Electron Dot Diagrams for Ionic Compounds

The steps to writing the electron dot diagram of an ionic compound are:
  • place the electron dot diagrams for the ions side by side
  • alternate the positive and negative ions if possible
  • ensure that the sum of the charges on all the ions in the compound is zero
Examples:
  1. Write the electron dot diagram of NaCl. See this step by step or only the final diagram.
  2. Write the electron dot diagram for MgCl2.See this step by step or only the final diagram.
  3. Write the electron dot diagram for Al2O3. See this step by step or only the final diagram.
